Representing Indigent Individuals

The Monroe County Public Defender’s Office represents indigent persons accused of a crime at every stage of the proceeding from the arraignment through final disposition. The Public Defender’s Office also represents indigent clients in a variety of family court matters, including child abuse, child neglect, termination of parental rights, family offense, custody, paternity and violation of child support.

Recognizing that an individual's constitutional rights must be protected regardless of his or her financial circumstances, our goal is to provide our clients truly competent legal representation, which is equal to that which they would expect to obtain from privately retained counsel. Our staff consists of 59 attorneys, as well as investigators, paralegals and other support staff, each of whom is committed to achieving justice for our clients.

We hope that this website will be of assistance to our clients, to persons interested in working in the Public Defender's Office, and the community at-large.

Legal Service Components

In compliance with federal and state constitutions, the Monroe County Public Defender’s Office is a legal service component of Monroe County Government which:

• provides quality legal representation to its clients;
• advocates for the protection of the constitutional rights of its clients;
• contributes to the efficient and effective operation of the criminal and family justice systems in Monroe County;
• where appropriate, advocates and works toward achieving results that have the greatest likelihood to help rehabilitate clients; and,
• creates a work environment that supports the empowerment and teamwork of its employees.
